Winner of the 1st SICOT Research Academy Grant (the highest research award in Orthopaedic Surgery) for the project “Effect of minimally invasive, low cost musculoskeletal surgery on gross motor function, quality of life, participation, and prevention of low energy fracture, musculoskeletal pain, and hip displacement in non-ambulatory children with cerebral palsy.”
Awarded by Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie (SICOT) or International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology. Principal Investigator: Dr. Deepak Sharan, India, co-investigator: Prof. Federico Canavese, Clermont Ferrand, France.

2019

Recipient of the Henri Bensahel Award (the world’s topmost research award in Paediatric Orthopaedics) for the best international research paper in Paediatric Orthopaedics titled “Surgical biomechanics in cerebral palsy – role of lever arm dysfunction.”
Awarded by SICOT during the 40th Orthopaedic World Congress in Muscat (Oman) on December 7, 2019.

2016

Delivered the Silver Jubilee Oration of Indian Orthopaedic Association for the research titled “Effect of a new single event multilevel lever arm restoration and anti spasticity surgery on gross motor function and mobility in non-ambulatory children with severe cerebral palsy.”
Delivered during IOACON (the world’s largest conference of orthopaedic surgeons) on December 15, 2016 at Kochi, India.

Winner of an International Scholarship for research presentation at 16th World Congress on Pain at Yokohama, Japan (September 25-30, 2016)

Winner of the Sri Mohanmal Award (Gold Medal) for the best scientific paper titled “Does addition of physician consultation and physiotherapy improve outcomes in an on-site Ergonomics intervention programme for work related musculoskeletal disorders?”
Presented during the annual conference of Association of Occupational Health Karnataka at Bengaluru.

Winner of the World Record for the Highest Number of Free Orthopaedic Surgeries performed on Bone and Joint Day (August 4, 2016) as a part of Indian Orthopaedic Association’s initiative.

Winner of Basic Science Orthopaedic Research Grant (one of the most prestigious research awards in Orthopaedics in India) by the Indian Orthopaedic Association for the research project titled “Prevalence, Risk factors and Clinical Features of Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders among Orthopaedic Surgeons in India.”

2014

Selected as the Instructional Course Lecturer on “Surgery for Cerebral Palsy” by the Indian Orthopaedic Association (November 2014). This honour is reserved for the nation’s top most authority on the subject. The ICL was published in the Indian Journal of Orthopaedics (May-June 2017).

Winner of an International Scholarship for research presentation at PREMUS 2010, the 7th International Conference on Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders at Angers, France (August 29-September 1, 2010)

The Health and Safety Executive and the Department of Health, Government of U.K. have proposed to fund a research study to document RECOUP’s extraordinary results with RSI as compared to NHS Hospitals and private clinics in the UK. A delegation representing these organisations visited RECOUP, Bengaluru in January 2010 for this purpose.

2009

Nominated by the Indian Society of Ergonomics as India’s sole representative at the International Ergonomics Council in 2009.

2008

Winner of National Disability Award (Best Individual working for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities) by the Govt. of India at New Delhi on December 6, 2008 for developing a revolutionary surgical procedure called Single Event Multilevel Lever Arm Restoration and Anti Spasticity Surgery (SEMLARASS) for Cerebral Palsy and providing free surgery and rehabilitation to clients with cerebral palsy from the disadvantaged sections of the society.
SEMLARASS has been performed in over 800 children from all over India and other countries in the past 20+ years and the functional results have been very encouraging. RECOUP has treated over 10,000 clients with various types of locomotor disabilities from across the world, using its exclusive functional rehabilitation approach.

2005

Dr. Sharan is also renowned for:

Being nominated to the Expert Committee on RSI to advise the Government of India regarding policy matters on RSI and Ergonomics.

Being the leader of a prospective study on predisposing factors, presentation and outcome of treatment of work related musculoskeletal disorders in Indian Computer Users covering 35000 computer professionals (2001-2009) which is the largest study of its kind in the world.

Being a world leader in the treatment of RSI and WRMSD, having developed his own treatment approach called the SHARAN’S Protocol (Skilled Hands-on Approach for Release of myofascia, Articular, Neural and Soft tissue mobilisation). Successfully treated over 1000000 clients with WRMSD from 45 countries, including several from USA, UK, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands, Poland, Israel, China, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Singapore, UAE and Zimbabwe since 2001.

His research on backpack injuries
Following a sustained campaign focusing on the health hazards of overloaded backpacks along with the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Kerala became the second state in the world (after California) to ban heavy backpacks in schoolchildren. Following a Civil Writ Petition, The High Court of Kerala at Ernakulam delivered a landmark judgment (WP(c) No. 35198) on December 6, 2004, directing the State Government to ensure that no school kid carried a backpack heavier than 10 percent of his/her body weight. His research was instrumental in obtaining this judgment.
